We have to study again paying a higher tuition or

quit our dreams since our professions are not

         recognize

Even having a visa or a work permit, it is difficult

and costly to change our legal status

To get the certification, some professionals have

to approve an extra test not required of U.S.

         citizens

Some H-1B sponsors have exploited the

professionals who do not complain for fear of

         losing their visas

Sponsors of H-1B professionals later had financial

problems firing those who became unemployed

We are denied to open bank accounts and

         currency exchange businesses require an

         insulting fee

We cannot travel by airplanes, due to the lack of

ID in detriment of the airline companies also

FOREIGN  PROFESSIONALS   IN  THE  UNITED  STATES

  •    Professional immigrants confronted different             problems that caused us to emigrate:

  •    In our countries there is a lack of jobs, wretched       salaries, violence, corruption, and no opportunities

  •    Our professional associations do not offer us       benefits deserved for having a better living

  •    Even in some countries there are no social          benefits to self-employed people

  •    It was challenging for us to get our degree                 without a financial assistance

The jobs are given to professionals with ties to a                politician or a prominent businessman, called                     “Godfather”

Immigrants feel out of place and trapped because

our own home countries change when we are

abroad. It is sad that after dedicating our youth to

study, we have not received its benefits.

WE ARE SPINNING THE WHEELS  in the

U.S., and more than ever before, needs our

workforce. It is demoralizing that people who

surround us do not understand our struggle with

the immigration policy. Despite our situation, many

of us did not take shortcuts to obtain “the papers.

Meeting our basic needs forces us to work in low-paying jobs we see: an architect/waitress,

an economist/handyman, a lawyer/taxi driver,

a dentist/nanny, and a pharmacist/ janitor.

The list goes on. As a result, we have limited

quality of life not equitable to our education. We

are living in neighborhoods that limit our interactions, we do not belong to groups with common interests, and we cannot afford suitable activities to grow professionally.

Many Americans are not informed well enough about the U.S. immigration policy. Many people criticize the immigrants that come to the United States without the legal permit.

However they do not realize that in different countries, the American embassies ask for requirements that are difficult to meet. These demands are: having a professional degree, a substantial bank account, and being preferably young.

If other countries would ask for the same demands, many U.S. citizens would not travel to other

different countries for pleasure or to live. It is well known that many Americans are retiring in other countries and also work without a work permit despite that it is easy to obtain.
